Puppy Feeding Schedule

Proper nutrition during your standard poodle's first year lays the foundation for a lifetime of health. Here's a straightforward guide to feeding from 8 weeks through adulthood.

Choosing the Right Food

Standard poodle puppies do best on a large-breed puppy formula. Large-breed formulas have controlled calcium and phosphorus levels that support steady bone growth — important for a breed that reaches 45–70+ lbs.

Look for:

  • AAFCO-approved for "growth" or "growth of large-size dogs"
  • Named meat as the first ingredient (chicken, turkey, salmon)
  • No artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives

We recommend brands like Royal Canin Large Breed Puppy, Purina Pro Plan Large Breed Puppy, or Hill's Science Diet Large Breed Puppy.

Feeding Schedule by Age

8–12 Weeks: 3 Meals Per Day

  • Amount: About 1–1.5 cups per meal (follow the bag's weight-based guidelines)
  • Times: Morning, midday, and evening
  • Tip: Soak kibble in warm water for 5 minutes to soften it. Their teeth are still tiny.

3–6 Months: 3 Meals Per Day

  • Amount: Gradually increase per the food label as your puppy gains weight
  • Times: Keep consistent timing — puppies thrive on routine
  • Tip: This is a rapid growth period. Monitor body condition — you should be able to feel ribs but not see them.

6–12 Months: 2 Meals Per Day

  • Amount: Follow large-breed puppy guidelines on the bag
  • Times: Morning and evening
  • Tip: Drop the midday meal around 6 months. Most puppies transition naturally.

12+ Months: Transition to Adult Food

  • Switch to a large-breed adult formula over 7–10 days
  • Continue feeding twice daily — most standard poodles do well with two meals rather than one

How Much Is the Right Amount?

Every puppy is different. Use the food bag as a starting point, then adjust based on:

  • Body condition — Feel the ribs. A slight fat covering is ideal.
  • Energy level — Very active puppies may need a bit more.
  • Growth rate — Standard poodles should grow steadily, not rapidly. Slow and steady produces healthier joints.

Your vet is the best resource for fine-tuning portions at each checkup.

Treats and Extras

  • Treats should be no more than 10% of daily calories
  • Great training treats: small pieces of cooked chicken, blueberries, or commercial training treats
  • Avoid: grapes, raisins, chocolate, onions, xylitol (artificial sweetener), cooked bones

Water

Fresh water should be available at all times. Pick up the water bowl about 2 hours before bedtime during housetraining to reduce overnight accidents.

Transitioning Foods

When switching foods, do it gradually over 7–10 days:

  • Days 1–3: 75% old food, 25% new food
  • Days 4–6: 50/50
  • Days 7–9: 25% old, 75% new
  • Day 10: 100% new food

If your puppy has loose stool during the transition, slow down and extend the timeline.

Feeding your puppy well doesn't have to be complicated. Stick with a quality large-breed puppy food, keep portions consistent, and adjust as they grow.
