Standard Poodle Grooming Guide

Standard poodles have a single-layer, continuously growing coat that doesn't shed like most breeds — but it does require regular grooming. Here's what you need to know.

Essential Grooming Tools

  • Slicker brush — Your daily workhorse. Use it in sections, brushing down to the skin.
  • Greyhound comb — Run through after brushing to find any remaining tangles.
  • Detangling spray — Lightly mist before brushing to prevent breakage.
  • Nail clippers or dremel — Trim nails every 2–3 weeks.
  • Ear cleaner — Poodles grow hair inside their ears. Clean weekly and pluck gently as needed.
  • Quality dog shampoo and conditioner — Look for gentle, moisturizing formulas.
  • Clippers (optional) — If you'll be doing at-home clips. Andis or Wahl are popular brands.

The Puppy Coat Transition

Standard poodle puppies are born with a soft, wavy coat. Between 9 and 18 months, this coat transitions to the denser, curlier adult coat. During this transition:

  • Matting increases dramatically — The soft puppy coat tangles with incoming adult hair
  • Daily brushing is non-negotiable — Mats that get close to the skin can cause pain and skin issues
  • Many owners opt for a shorter clip during this period — A "puppy cut" (uniform length all over, usually 1–2 inches) keeps things manageable
  • Professional grooming every 4 weeks is recommended during the transition

This is the hardest grooming period you'll face. Push through it — once the adult coat comes in fully, maintenance gets easier.

Basic Home Grooming Routine

  1. Mist with detangling spray
  2. Section the coat — Work in small areas (one leg at a time, then chest, then back)
  3. Brush with the slicker brush — Brush in the direction of hair growth, all the way down to the skin. "Line brushing" (parting the hair and brushing layer by layer) is the gold standard.
  4. Follow with the comb — If the comb glides through, you're mat-free. If it catches, go back with the brush.
  5. Check ears, eyes, and feet — Wipe eyes, clean ears, check paw pads for debris.

Total time: 15–20 minutes for a well-maintained coat.

Professional Grooming

Find a groomer who has experience with standard poodles. Ask for:

  • Recommendations from your breeder or local poodle club
  • A shop visit before the first appointment — See the environment and meet the groomer
  • Start early — Get your puppy on the grooming table as young as 10–12 weeks for a "puppy intro" (face, feet, and sanitary trim)

Standard poodle grooming clips range from simple (puppy cut, lamb cut) to elaborate (continental, English saddle). Talk to your groomer about what fits your lifestyle.

Cost

Professional grooming for a standard poodle typically runs $80–$150+ per session, depending on your location and the complexity of the cut. Budget for this as a recurring expense — it's part of the commitment of owning a poodle.

Grooming is one of the most rewarding parts of poodle ownership. A well-groomed standard poodle is a showstopper — and regular grooming keeps your dog comfortable, healthy, and happy.
